It is Sunday afternoon and I have not stopped thinking of my week in Mfuleni. No words can explain the way I feel at present. The job satisfaction, emotion, sadness and more important the longing to return again next year to another venture has been in my thoughts all day. I can fully understand how so many of you have returned every year since the first building blitz in 2003. As a rookie, I made lots of friends during the week, many of whom I know I will continue to keep in contact with.

Unfortunately, the problems facing these people (in the townships) are ongoing and it will take an age to make an impression on their lives.

The positives out of our week are that we the Builders Blitz of 2006 have completed 70 houses that will take 240 adults and 465 children out of shacks and into brick houses with running water, showers and toilets, bedrooms and living room. These are facilities that we all take for granted in our comfort zone.

Well done to all the 357 volunteers, 108 were rookies, while there was 1 female for every 19 men.

Let us all bring a new volunteer with us in 2007 and help Niall Mellon reach his target of 1000 Irish volunteers. Will the South Africans be able to match us, one for one???
