Mfuleni is a relatively new township about 40 kilometres from Cape Town. It is a predominantly black township, although there are also some coloured members of the community.

Mfuleni is a suburb of Blue Downs, close to the sprawling township of Khayelitsha. Around 25,000 people live in this township. Most were moved there in the late 1990s following flooding and fires in different townships across the Cape, such as Phillipi, Nyanga and Khayelitsha. Hence, the mixed nature of the community here.

The NMTT has pledged to build a total of 728 quality homes in extension 6, Mfuleni. There are approximately 7,000 people living in this part of the township. Work began on site in June 2006 and it is hoped to complete this project within two years.

In November 2006, 358 volunteers built 70 houses in one week, in Mfuleni. Our local South African staff have built a further 220 houses throughout the year. These houses are free-standing and, in an effort to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly, solar panels to heat the hot water geyser have been installed in these homes. We hope solar panels will become a regular feature of all our new homes. We are also exploring other ways to be more eco-friendly in our approach to building homes and communities, such as basic water conservations methods and energy efficient light-bulbs.
