Charlie McCreevy pays an official visit to the NMTT projects in Cape Town
July 2007,
Ireland’s Commissioner to the EU, Charlie McCreevy, paid an official visit to the NMTT projects in Cape Town in early July.
The former Finance Minister was on a whirlwind trip to South Africa and had wanted to see the work of the charity for himself.
Niall Mellon brought the commissioner on a tour of the NMTT’s first housing project in Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay. The Kildare man was accompanied by his deputy chef du cabinet, Claire Bury and the European Commission’s Ambassador to South Africa Ludwig Briet.
Commissioner McCreevy visited some of the shacks where thousands of people are still living in the picturesque suburb. He also toured some of the homes which the NMTT built between 2003 and 2005.
